Vocabulary: Top, Bottom, Dominant, Submissive

Top: Giver

Bottom: Receiver

Dominant: Commanding

Bottom: Obeying

I think that most people think Top is synonymous with Dominant, and Bottom is synonymous with Submissive. This is not the case, although there is usually a large correlation for those pairings.

Examples of a Top / Dominant with a Bottom / Submissive:
  • Boy/Girl missionary, if the guy is doing the work he is 'giving' (aka the 'top') and the girl is 'receiving' (aka the 'bottom'), if additionally the guy is telling her to "spread your legs" he is 'commanding' (aka being dominant) and if the girl complies she is 'obeying' (aka being submissive).
  • A Dominatrix telling her slave to "beg for it" (<- command (dominant)) while whipping him (<- giving (top)).

Counter-examples of those pairings:
  • Boy/Girl missionary, if the guy is doing the work he is 'giving' (aka the 'top') and the girl is 'receiving' (aka the 'bottom'), if additionally the girl is telling him to "do it harder" or "hold me down" she is 'commanding' (aka being dominant) and if the guy complies he is 'obeying' (aka being submissive).
  • A Dominatrix telling her slave to "lick my boot" (<- command (dominant)) and he licks it (<- he is giving (top)).

Comments

  1. That's exactly my point. You Can. :) 'Bottom' and 'Submissive' are not synonymous OR mutually exclusive.

  2. Also, conversly, If the dominatrix gives the command "lick my boot" (<---command/dominant) and her slave licks it (<--he is giving but I don't think he would be considered a "top" as the slave is already in the submissive position. Can you "top" from the "bottom"?
